Support qualified ECE teachers on world teacher’s day

Support qualified ECE teachers on world teacher’s day- Publication date: 29 October 2010

World Teacher's Day is an opportunity to recognise the importance and value of qualifications for early childhood teachers says Te Tari Puna Ora o Aotearoa / NZ Childcare Association Chief Executive Nancy Bell.

"Having qualified teachers is a critical component in the delivery of a high quality early childhood education for the youngest New Zealanders. All children, no matter what their social background, should have access to a qualified early childhood teacher if they are participating in ECE."

"Funding cuts to early childhood services due to come into effect in February next year are likely to impact on the numbers of qualified teachers that services can employ. Responses to our recent funding survey shows that nearly a half of services will lose the equivalent of a teacher's salary in funding. We'll probably be in a situation where centres with a fully qualified teaching staff will be too costly for families with tight budgets and lower incomes."

"On World Teacher's Day we are asking everyone to consider the importance that qualifications play in a high quality early childhood education. Teachers with qualifications understand child development and are able to support all children to learn. This ability is critical when teachers have responsibility for groups of children away from home for many hours every day."

On Saturday 30th October NZEI are asking teachers and learners around the country to put their hands up for learning. NZCA staff, students and members will be joining in the celebrations.

"We're supporting World Teacher's Day and our hands will certainly be up for qualified teachers."
